Delval Equipment Boiler Warms the Letterman Show

When the U.S. Synchronized Swim Team performed on CBS-TV’s Late Show with David Letterman this August immediately prior to its departure for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, the production company charged with building and filling a temporary 48,000-gallon swimming pool outside of the show’s Midtown Manhattan studios realized at the last minute, that, for the nine women swimmers to be comfortable, the water needed to be warmer than 58° -- the temperature of New York City fire hydrant water that would be used to fill the pool. The production company then called Delval Equipment, asking the company to heat the swimming pool water.

Knowing that it would be difficult to get permits to transport liquid propane and fuel oil through the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels on short notice, Delval Equipment did some engineering calculations and figured that 12,000 gallons of 180° water, mixed with 36,000 gallons of 58° fire hydrant water, would warm the pool temperature to a comfortable 84° . The actual water temperature was 85° , and the U.S. Synchronized Swim Team was extremely pleased with the conditions under which they performed.

The team won the bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics.
